HOMEWORK WATER IN NATURE

                   WATER  IN  NATURE

GLACIER:  a slowly moving mass of ice formed by the accumulation and compaction of snow on mountains or near the poles.

WATERFALL:  a cascade of water falling from a height, formed when a river or stream flows over a precipice or steep incline.

TORRENT:  a strong and fast-moving stream of water.
                                            Torrent in Pico de la Muga - Panticosa (Huesca)

LAKE:  a large area of water surrounded by land

Covadonga Lakes – Picos de Europa (Asturias)
                                                                                     
TRIBUTARY:  a river or stream flowing into a larger river or lake.
                                                            Pucon river – Chile

RIVER:  a large natural flow of water travelling along a channel to the sea, a lake or another river.
                                                            Sena river – Paris (France)

UPPER COURSE:  upper river, in it the land is steep and so the river flow is stronger. This causes erosion.
                                                     Guadalquivir river – Quesada (Jaen)

MIDDLE COURSE:  middle of the river, river´s flow is weaker and there is less erosion. The river deposits the large materials here. It continues to transport the smaller materials.
                                                Tajo river – Talavera de la Reina (Toledo)

LOWER COURSE:  river bottom, the river deposits the small materials it is carrying.
                                                   Manzanares river – Madrid

DELTA:  a triangular tract of sediment deposited at the mouth of a river, typically where it diverges into several outlets.
                                                          Ebro delta – Tarragona (Spain)

MARSH:  an area of low-lying land which is flooded in wet seasons or at high tide, and typically remains waterlogged at all times.
                                                    Doñana marsh – Ayamonte (Huelva)

MEANDER:  a winding curve or bend of a river.
                                Amazonas river – Peru, Colombia, Brazil (South America)

ESTUARY:  the tidal mouth of a large river.
     


Plata river – Argentina, Uruguay (South America)

MOUTH:  the place where a river enters the sea.
  
Miño river – La Guardia (Pontevedra)

LAGOON:  a stretch of salt water separated from the sea by a low sandbank or coral reef.
         
Salt lagoons of the Camargue – Provence (France)
Inarajam – Marianas Islands. Micronesia (Oceania)
             
SEDIMENTATION:  the depositing of materials by a river.
   
Yaque river – Dominican Republic (South America)
